Plot – Spoilers:
Selma, a Czechoslovakian immigrant in ’60s America, lives with her son in a rented trailer and works a menial job at a factory. Diminutive, child-like and prone to flights of musical fantasy, Selma is liked and understood by people around her, mostly for her firm honesty.
But Selma has her secrets and lies, apart from a weird British accent she often breaks into. She’s losing her sight – a genetic condition she’s certain her son Gene is afflicted with too. And so her singular ambition is to save up for his eye operation when he hits thirteen.
Guilt is the overriding theme here and in some ways, Selma is driven to the choices she makes in the end, by a desperation for atonement – for having had Gene despite knowing he was likely to have the same degenerative condition.
Favorite scene is probably the end. Not because it was finally done, but for the abruptness with which a song can end.
God I hate musicals …and not a big djork fan ,and like some gal as hot as the great Cathrine Denueve is working in a metal stamp factory?? Udo “ to know life is to fuck death in the gall bladder” kier?? What a strange little romp of cast name dropping ….joel gray?? Wow.
I give this film a one …..one finger salute.
After hearing so much about this being so awful I just didn’t think it was, good film tho!
She’s so hot I wanna watch her rectum split as I fist it into destruction..
its oretty giid i like bjork i think vespertine her best album
I love Lars’s work, it’s amazingly sick and lovely. Thx for uploading his movies so young people can get a sense of great art and get familiar with great directors like him.
I can NOT FUCKING STAND musicals, but i loved this movie so much.
This was so heartbreaking. The ending had me sobbing. The fact that it ended so abruptly really fucked me up. Amazing movie.
Bjork is so hideous and off putting it’s impossible to have any sympathy with her . . . The only halfway rewarding part of the movie is the ending, and even that’s soiled by two hysterical caricatures. I mean, you’d think they’d lock that door . . . Whatever, RIP, Ricardo.
I would like to watch like that movies
Couldn’t watch past 10 mins. Who cares lol
Wow.. corny as hell
Great film. Lars Van Trier’s best IMHO.
OMG, who knew you’d offer me up such a heartwrenching, musical here! I’m sobbing… it was utterly beautiful. Thank you so much for this site!
this movie wasn’t that effed up and i usually find musicals cheesy, but i loved Björk’s singing and this movie was surprisingly good
that was gorgeous. i sobbed throughout the entire ending.
they really made us fall hard for selma before ripping her away, huh?
thank you for posting this. the american justice system is fucked.
Sad, depressing and very well acted. Thanks for uploading this one.
What an incredible film. This one will stick with you.
Thank you for this upload. What an amazing movie.. I’m still in tears
Most depressing movie I have ever seen. Just thinking of the ending makes me tear up instantly. Thank you for your wonderful uploads and stay safe in this horrible time
thank you very much
Hands down one of the best disturbingly sad films I’ve ever seen and 20 years later it still gives me chills. Even the lead actress Bjork (A Singer) spoke on how emotionally draining it was to perform or act in this film and for that reason may never do it again . Lars Von Trier is a genius and he may have more noteworthy films but to me this storyline intertwined through a musical from start to finish is an absolute masterpiece.
